There is a lot of information available on the internet about The Order of the Knights Templar. Their full name is „The Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Salomon“. The German Order of the Knights Templar follows in the footsteps of The Knights Templar, raising their mystical spirituality to an ethical understanding of our time. Our brothers and sisters as members of our spiritual Knights Order meet at least four times annually at the Chapters of the Order. Our brothers and sisters operate in the world of daily life and not in a monastery or nunnery. During a three year novitiate, they go through an initiation process to discover the basic truths underlying all religions.
The Templar Seal
The Knights Templar Order was founded in 1118 and recognized in 1139 by papal bull „Omne Datum Optimum“ of the Holy See. Their vow of poverty is represented in the Templar seal: two Knights in armor on a horse. The Templar lived a life of humility and poverty, at least initially. Their seal points to the idea of fraternity in the brotherhood community of our Templar Order.
The Templar Cross
The Coats of Arms of The German Order of the Knights Templar is the black and white flag with a red cross on the dividing line between black and white. The center point of the cross symbolizes unity. The Templar goal is „being“, i.e. to rise above the opposites (polarity) into unity. This aspect is illustrated by the center point of our red Templer cross which can be used as reference point for concentration.
Given the many military conflicts in the Holy Land and their encounter with the mystery schools of Islam and Judaism, the Templar developed their very own spirituality, going beyond the mainstream beliefs of their time. Following the end of the crusades, the knowledge and understanding gained in the Holy Land gave rise to the rapid economic success of the Templar. Due to their newly found perspectives on life and their knowledge of spiritual laws, the Templar were able to maintain a respectful relationship with the Hashshashin, the Islamic Military Order - counterpart to the Templar Military Order.
Activities of the Templars
The activities of the Templar comprised not only military service, contemplation and diplomacy. The Order was granted the privilege to charge interest for lending money and/or loans. This used to be the domain of the Jews. The Templar started lending huge amounts of money to impoverished monarchs und thus became the bankers to all European Kingdoms, even to some Muslim rulers. The Templar Order established chapters throughout Europe and the Middle East. For a small fee only, they conducted money transfers for merchants. By applying the Templar secrets they began to develop a good business sense. As a result, the Templar became important money changers of their time. The Templar invented bills of exchange and cheques. In addition, they provided account management and investment advisory services for rulers and trading firms. The Paris Chapter of the Order developed into a European financial center. Further Templar inventions were the three-field-system of crop rotation, building cathedrals (not churches!) and land consolidation.
Other Templar Areas of Activity
Cartography, maritime, road construction and medicine continue the list of Templar innovations. Thus, promoting progress and serving humanity in their time. Their diplomatic connections to Islam and Judaism promoted cultural diversity and tolerance. This was no small matter in the Middle Ages. The consequent application of the knowledge gained made The Order of the Knights Templar a charismatic institution whose power and wealth was unrivalled. In the end, it was their ensuing lack of humility which caused their fall: pride goes before a fall. With the loss of their fortress Acre in May 1291, the Christian era of the Holy Land came to an end.
The founding of The Order of the Teutonic Knights by The Knights Templar
At the end of the 12th Century, the Templar played a role in the founding of the Teutonic Order - a religious Knights Order. The Teutonic Order was only moderately involved in the activities in the Middle East. Around the middle of the 13th Century, The Teutonic Order focused its entire attention on the north-eastern border of the Christian world where they founded an independent Principality. In this Teutonic Order state - which stretched over the entire eastern Baltic territory - the Teutonic Knights were able to exercise their power.
The Persecution of the Templar
The Knights Templar and The Teutonic Order began to go separate ways. Because of their contacts to the Islamic and Jewish culture, the Templar became increasingly liberated, absorbing more and more mystical and spiritual knowledge and understanding. They founded their own spirituality, alienating themselves from the Church of that time. The Templar position of cultural tolerance, their intellectual curiosity und openness to the unknown was not endorsed by the Church. In a spectacular trial at the beginning of the 14th Century, The Templar Order was accused of heresy (departure from the pure ecclesiastical curia). Templar dignitaries confessed to the charges under torture (denial of Jesus Christ, greed, meanness, sodomy, homosexuality).
The Execution of the Templar
The Templar wealth did not go down well with the King of France. Following a show trial, the King had the last official Grandmaster of The Order of the Knights Templar, Jacques de Molay, burnt alive at the stake, together with two of his followers. The assets of the Order were confiscated. Modern research shows that the Templar fell victim to intrigue. From today's perspective, the Knights Templar can be viewed as the mystical guardians of secret knowledge that goes beyond the teachings of Christianity. To this day, the Templar keep the tradition of strict confidentiality. The knowledge is passed on exclusively in a step by step initiation process. This way, the Templar novice gains an in-depth understanding and realization of the teachings.
Significance of the Templar Order
The bravery of the fascinating and enigmatic Templar, their ability to concentrate their energies und their power of innovation is undisputed. In its time of splendor, The Templar Order was the most powerful and influential organisation of the entire Christendom - with the exception of the papacy. On October 10, 2007, the Vatican published a correction, saying that injustice was done to the Templar Order. The Italian scientist, Barbara Frale, discovered a long-lost document in the secret archives of the Vatican, proving that Pope Clemens V. absolved the dignitaries of the Templar Order of all heresies in 1312. As a reminder, Jacques de Molay, the last Grandmaster of the Order was burned at the stake in 1314. The document in question together with a reproduction of the court documents is due to be published in the book „Processus contra Templarios“ on October 25, 2007.
Today The German Order of the Knights Templar is a mystical-spiritual Knights Order, teaching the Templar secrets to all our brothers and sisters by means of a step by step initiation process.
